This past August, 16 brothers from the Sigma Chi chapter at the University of Cincinnati went on a mission trip to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti for 7 days. Here's a glimpse of our journey.

DERBY DAYS

Derby Days is Sigma Chi's national philanthropy benefitting the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah. HCI  was started by Sigma Chi and two-time cancer survivor, Jon M. Huntsman. In 1995, inspired by the support from many family and friends, the Huntsman family pledged 100 million dollars for a state of the art cancer research facility. Over a decade later, Huntsman Cancer Institute is one of the leading cancer research facilities in the world.

Derby Days is hosted by hundreds of Sigma Chi chapters across the country and unlike most fundraisers, Derby Days is a week long.

Recently, Huntsman Cancer Institute has organized a website for online donations, so the money is given directly to the cause. Go to www.derbychallenge.org and search schools for 'University of Cincinnati'. Click the team 'OutsideDonors' and then click 'donate now'. Select an amount, fill out your information, and dedicate the donation to a loved one in honor of their survival, or in memory of their departure.

Last year we raised a record of $36,000! Thank you to every one who helped us in our efforts.

SIGMA CHI IN THE COMMUNITY

Weekly Tutoring at Inner City Youth Opportunities: a group of about 10-12 Sigma Chis and Pi Phis go to ICYO located in Roselawn to tutor kids in grades K-4. We also go on field trips like the Cincinnati nature center, where we learned to make syrup from tree sap, and to the University for a tour of campus, lunch and some fun in the rec center. This year we are looking to bring the kids back to UC for another day of fun involving the college of business to do some money related activities of help them learn math and business. (our most consistent and best service opportunity)

Sisters of Charity Bayley Nursing Home Trips: Sigma Chi will be teaming up with Gamma Phi to bring some joy into the day of the residents at Bayley nursing home in Delhi. Some events include a Halloween party, bingo and “Senior Prom.” (Newest service opportunity)

Military Care Package Drive: Sigma Chi will be raising funds and materials to send overseas to our troops. This drive will mainly headed by the entire Greek Community, but is also open to anyone willing to donate. We are trying to give people the chance to give directly to those they care about. Donaters are able to give us an address and name so their donation goes directly to the people they want.

Christmas Canned Food Drive: Sigma Chi teamed up with the UC bookstore and Apple campus store to collect canned food for the Free Store Foodbank.

Other Campus Service Involvement: Sigma Chi has also participated in other campus run service events such as: Community Plunge, Cincinnati Dance Marathon and Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s Disability Olympics.
